Re: Paste is at it again: their "Top 100 films" of the 1950s
It's an odd and interesting selection, and reliably provocative. I don't pay a lot of attention to the numbering outside of the top 5-10 anyway as most lists will veer into highly idiosyncratic territory after that point. The western selections are very conservative, aside from perhaps The Big Sky - I'd have liked to see Delmer Daves represented and something from Anthony Mann and Budd Boetticher.
As for melodrama, I'm keener on Cat on a Hot Tin Roof than I perhaps ought to be, or than it deserves, but I'm left scratching my head over how it is considered worthy of a place over any of Sirk's movies. And while Minnelli is represented, surely Some Came Running should have made the cut too.
I thought it's a bit light on Sci-Fi, with nothing from Jack Arnold, not even The Incredible Shrinking Man.
