Six French noirs--the same six French noirs that are always the ones that get played when the benighted "cognoscenti" speak of French noir--are neatly arranged in the article that's linked here, written by a man who lives in Paris and presumably has access to the hundreds of other pre-1960 noir titles that have been released on DVD in France.
At least Ginette Vincendeau named twelve films, including films in the 1930s and 1940s, in her Sight & Sound essay a few years ago. (Though she did include three of these titles--GRISBI, RIFIFI, LE DOULOS--in her list.)
For anyone who's not had a chance to examine a much more comprehensive overview of French noir which covers the "non-gangster" aspect of that vast (600+ fils) oeuvre, here's the link to my piece at Bright Lights Film Journal that will give you something more to chew on than the same of "six-pack of French noir" that is still mechanically repeated ad nauseum.

Don't get me wrong--these six are all very good films. It's just that there are a hundred other French noirs that are just as good, if not (gasp!) better. As it happens, I've only screened one of the six--I'll let you guess which one...
