And a good-sized push to get folks into the theater next weekend (September 23-25) is underway for the latest edition of Noir City Detroit.
9/23
Friday evening IN A LONELY PLACE/SOUTHSIDE 1-1000
9/24
Saturday matinee T-MEN/THE ARGYLE SECRETS
Saturday evening NIGHTMARE ALLEY (1947)/THE SPIRITUALIST
9/25
Sunday matinee PHANTOM LADY/FLY-BY-NIGHT
As can be seen by the selections, it's another "A-B" knockoff--though we wonder if T-MEN really qualifies as an "A" or not...whatevah!
Nice to see the Ty Power NIGHTMARE ALLEY getting another 75th anniversary screening. And there are certain "internal matchups" that have a good feel to them with this configuration, particularly with some of the actresses who face off in the double features. For example:
Gloria Grahame v. Andrea King on Friday--a pity these two never got teamed up in a noir...
Two hard-ass ladies get some good screen time in T-MEN and THE ARGYLE SECRETS, adding some spice to two films that are frankly a little flat.
Coleen Gray and Cathy O'Donnell add some spunk to their good-girl personas on Saturday night.
And the young Nancy Kelly does more for yours truly than Ella Raines in the eye candy department...of course, YMMV.
A festival pass provides "swag" and a meet-and-greet with bar benefits on Saturday that also features what appears to be the initial incarnation of the "Ask Eddie" roadshow. Keep an eye out for it on YouTube...
Fingers crossed that the turnout is solid--we need more noir, and we need more operating movie palaces.
