Saturday: two films from mercurial Swedish director Arne Mattsson, MANNEQUIN IN RED (1958), the second of his five "color" thrillers (all films with colors in their titles)--a film that was admired by Alfred Hitchcock--and the stark (and occasionally stark-raving-mad) THE DOLL (1962), where a lonely, alienated night watchman steals a department store mannequin for companion and soon discovers that his new roommate is no dummy. (Will have to run this one through the noir-o-meter at some point...)
Sunday: two acclaimed but-still-obscure films from Norway: the eerie, low-key thriller LAKE OF THE DEAD, where the legend of a murder curse attached to a remote cabin in the woods takes over the lives of six friends who come to stay in it, and the stirring NINE LIVES, commemorating the real-life experiences of a Norwegian commando who is the sole survivor of a Nazi ambush and his arduous attempts to escape from their clutches in the forbidding terrain of a Norwegian winter.
MID/MAD is in mid-season form--films start at 12 noon at the Roxie, if you are in/around SF this weekend, join us...
