I'm going to try to preserve as much of Mike's work on neo-noir as is feasible: there is so much of it that it will require some serious thought as to how to make it less "in-process" as was the case over the 2019-20 timeframe that it occurred...

...but as a first step, here is a thread originally called "Sample of a Sample" that began as a look at a portion of Mike's film ratings that focused at first on his top-rated films since 1960. My comments (which follow, and the balance of the thread) moves more into determining the dividing line between noir and neo-noir, which did not achieve anything definitive but is IMO worth preserving for reference.

First, here's Mike's initial post in the thread, followed by the subsequent posts. These are all from early 2019:

I'd have to watch a zillion movies a second time before I could attempt a fine-grained ranking, and even then I could not do it meaningfully.

I had the idea of extracting all the post-1960 noirs (or maybe-noirs) from my 3,000 odd reviews that I gave a score of 8, 9 or 10 at the time. Even this is too daunting a task. I did take a small sample from about 500 films out of the 3,000+. It's biased because the population from which it's drawn is biased. It omits films I watched but did not rate prior to my reviewing years and after my reviewing years.

I'll share it with you anyway for what it's worth. It clearly is not much like what popular lists of neo-noirs contain. A lot of items on those lists are movies I'd rate as 6 or 7 (out of 10). My viewing included lots of foreign films and lots of 60s and 70s films, so they contribute a lot of movies here. Are all of these neo-noir? Who actually knows? I don't.

NN means "not neo."

Films here that are close to being in a Top 100 are LA MORT DE BELLE (one of the most astonishing character transmogrifications in all of noir); BLACK TEST CAR (they don't get much nastier than this even in today's corporate world!); LE SEPTIEME JURE (the script is a bit queasy in places, but Blier is absolutely amazing); ASSAULT ON THE PAY TRAIN (which is definitely in my Top 50--just a totally stunning piece of work.

LIPSTICK is also a really well-done film (I note three Damiani films on this list) but not quite a Top 100 contender in my book.

LIPSTICK and ASSAULT ON THE PAY TRAIN were part of our first "Rare Noir is Good to Find" series, which might pick up again next year; LE SEPTIEME JURE played in French 2; LA MORT DE BELLE will play this November in French 6.

That's interesting--maybe I'll pull out another sample even though it's only the ones I rated most highly.

I find 1966-67 very interesting because the 60s were a watershed era in so many other ways. The country was having to absorb Vietnam, protests, plus an activist political agenda reflecting in vast new social programs. This is the time when Hippiedom, new dances, new kinds of black music, peyote, drug experimentation, Bonnie and Clyde, clothes and non-clothes, etc. were all appearing or being intensified. Non-noir movies reflected this. There were psychedelic scenes.

(The Money Game might be a holdout.)

Most of us codgers on this board lived through this. The late 50s were already a time when beatnik talk, bop talk and jazz musician habits were penetrating widely. I hit it first in 1958 when I was recruited into a jazz band by a West Coast pianist who talked the talk.

Things got wild for awhile, and, if your observation holds, it seems to have shown up in the shift from the last gasp of noir to neo-noir. If so, I should be able to verify your thesis in the 1966 and after films. I think we'll see it in the detective movies of Sinatra, Newman, McQueen, also in Madigan.

Here's some more rated 8 or higher. Looking at 1970 and after, I begin to see the makings of a neo-noir 100 that I'd stand by. In extracting this I bypassed quite a few rated 6 and 7, and I had a fair amount of enthusiasm for the 7s.

At this point, Mike abandoned the idea of pinpointing a transition point for neo-noir and using his own grading scale to create a "top" neo-noir list. He also decided to limit the scope of the investigation's next phase to American films, perhaps based on the reasoning that trying to cover the foreign films would wind up being too incomplete to be of much value. That list, which formed the basis for the often-frenetic, digressive effort that followed, is reproduced below, from the last post in this thread:

I've set this method aside and am toying with another approach. This is simple. From established lists of neo-noirs, find their IMDb ratings and rank the films by these ratings. The list becomes a popularity poll. It's biased somewhat toward "big" popular movies, and yet it's quite interesting to take as data. I haven't finished this. I am only through the letter Q on Spicer's list, and his list stops in 2008. When this is completed, it can be used to look at any number of questions and comparisons. It's limited to American movies dating from 1967 and after.
