Internet film data sources indicate that one of the two versions of the film played in just over seven hundred theaters this past weekend (those sources do not appear to be distinguishing between the two versions of the film, so the accounting remains murky) and added about a quarter of a million to the film's overall box office.
There was a small box office uptick in the last week of January (just before the film went "to stream" at HBO Max and Hulu), presumably in part due to the editorial intervention of Martin Scorsese.
IIRC, the announcement of Oscar nominations is due tomorrow, and we'll see if the efforts of del Toro (who's been extremely active in promoting the film over the month of January) and Scorsese will have influenced the Academy insiders. Even with a still-stagnant box office (<$11 million in the USA), there is still the issue of "prestige," and it could be that much of the real battle this past month has been to do some subtle (and not-so-subtle) arm-twisting in hopes of further face-saving.
