At least as far as LA is concerned, downtown still has a half-dozen or so palaces still standing that could be preserved in a one-per-city historical scenario, although most of them are now churches (as is the Olympic Auditorium sports palace) and one wonders if they could ever be reacquired.

I know when I drive through the Mission in SF, I weep at all the old theater marquees in which the actual theaters are completely demolished. There has to be at least a half-dozen. The midsize older theaters like the Balboa, Roxie and Vogue are hanging in and it appears the 4 Star on Clement in the Richmond District will soon reopen.
