One of the great things about being able to show more films is that many great actors/actresses who are completely unknown to American audiences can get multiple showcases.
LES GRANDES FAMILLES gives us a third performance from the great monstre sacré Pierre Brasseur, and arguably his most flamboyant. All three are markedly different from one another, showing the range of this character-lead-on-steroids who began as a matinée idol but soon swerved to follow in the footsteps of Michel Simon. In FRENCH 5 we see him first as Jojo, a fat hobo-like character--as far from his matinee idol phase as its possible to get--in PORTE DES LILAS (1957). Then, the next day, we see him as a handsome, manipulative villain whose unhealthy love for young Anouk Aimee creates infinite havoc in LES AMANTS DE VERONE (1949). Finally, he's the decadent cousin who threatens to topple a financial empire in LES GRANDES FAMILLES (1958).
