Dan, you’ll get no argument from me that social issues depicted in the movies are in no way limited to film noir. But that’s the subgroup of films that Emily K. is referencing in her essay, and that’s all I was responding to. I’m happy for you to make a lengthier case for films in other genres and how they might well be more encompassing, and encourage you to take your thought further. Speaking solely about films from the pre-Civil Rights era that we can classify as noir, however, I’m sticking by THE LAWLESS.
