I would also rate "Scarlet Street" as a much better film than "The Woman in the Window." My copy is a restoration that includes material about "Chris Cross" going completely out of his mind and attempting suicide due to his guilt following the murder of Kitty and the wrongful execution of Johnny.
I had similar feelings for the cop out finishes of "The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry" (Siodmak) or "Strange Impersonation" (Mann). The latter film was screened at a Noir City festival and the hosts almost apologized for including it. The theater audience howled at the finale. "The Great Flamarion" would have been a better Mann entry.
Fritz Lang, Anthony Mann, and Robert Siodmak were all great directors, but each of the films that I cited failed to deliver upon their potential.
