You may recall that Robert Hossein passed away on New Year's Eve last year (2020), the day after his 93rd birthday. You can read the post here about his passing here: https://members.boardhost.com/mrvalentine/msg/1609626122.html
Circumstances did not permit us to hold the "Noir Noel" event on December 30th (Hossein's actual birthday), but we'll celebrate his 94th birthday and his unique (and still criminally unsung) contributions to (French) film noir by screening six noirs he directed and/or starred in. Hossein kicked off "the last wave" of French film noir with LES SALAUDS VONT EN ENFER, helping to define a new energy in dark film that did not focus on the "heist film" vogue that paralleled his efforts and those of other new and veteran filmmakers up through 1966, when classic noir hits that brick wall known as "black & white is dead." (If you are able to be with us on 11/12, you'll see how Hossein handled that in his final noir, POINT DE CHUTE, made in 1970 and starring French rock'n'roller Johnny Hallyday--"the French Elvis"--who transcends what might first appear to be "stunt casting" to give an astringent, highly affecting performance.)
Thanks as always to the stalwarts who've stayed with us on this epic journey across "the lost continent" of classic French film noir.
