I left in November 1981, coming up to my 40 year anniversary. I lived in SF, so I wasn't familiar with the small theaters in Berkeley. Other than the PFA, the only theater I remember going to was the UC Theater on University Ave. Of course, SF used to be full of small neighborhood theaters. The Castro and Roxie are among the handful that are left. My favorite was the Surf out on Irving St. two blocks from Ocean Beach. When I became an avid filmgoer I went to the Surf a great deal. It was an art house where I saw many of the foreign classics. There is now a church on the property:-(
The Cinema Treasures site lists 30 Berkeley theaters that either have closed or been demolished. A staggering number for a city of that size.
