Lawrence Tierney as a good guy? Can we handle this, or is it simply not “feasible”? But this gushing review of STEP BY STEP, where we see RKO working hard to make the Irascible One into a beefcake icon (opposite the lissome Anne Jeffreys), just might suggest that there was a glimmer of hope in 1946 that Tierney would become a standard leading man. Of course, such an outcome would have been as boring as much of STEP BY STEP still is, despite its two-fisted action and its restoration by the Warner Archive that makes it look as good as it ever has.
Veteran director Phil Rosen has a number of films, several dating back into the 30s, that are more deserving of restoration and release than STEP BY STEP, which benefits from its association with noir and with the “legacy” of our man Tierney.
