Long time, no talk. Thanks for the kind words. That book came out the same year I was married and we celebrate 40 this November. My first VHS player, which weighted a ton and cost about $850 (how times have changed) got plenty of use when I was taping stuff off the Late Show and KTVU's Dialing For Dollars. The disadvantage of watching those films off TV broadcasts were the cuts they made for commercials. I was also fortunate that the Pacific Film Archives in Berkeley over a period of a few years kept a steady flow of noirs screened, most in 35mm. I spent many nights there with a notepad and pen light taking copious notes. Of course, living in SF, what I hated was crossing the bridge in rush hour traffic (especially on Friday) just so I could see Hazel Brooks in Sleep, My Love or Darnell in Fallen Angel. The hassle of coming across the bridge and getting on to the MacArthur Freeway from the left and then trying to get over 4 lanes to get off Ashby Avenue was all worth it. That was a great film period of my life, because during those PFA excursions I got to be within arm's reach of our favorite screen psycho- Tim Carey and virtually rubbed shoulders with Russ Meyer and his arm candy at the time, Kitten Natividad (I can comment here with a tasteless joke about rubbing against something else other than the shoulder, but I'll stifle myself) :-)
