But Bob is right—despite the lack of indexes and master lists, Grant’s tome is more than worth burying yourself in for days on end. Possibly the most engaging writer about noir to be found, and one who was happy to discover that the American paradigm for noir was clearly not the only game in town. It’s not as easy a book to use as it could be, but it’s always filled with cogent, entertaining insights and very supple prose.
Bob is also in the money re THE FILM NOIR BIBLE, though it is more conspicuously Americano in outlook and demonstrates a lot of antipathy to the blacklisted directors/writers amidst the current of cynicism that permeates Wampa’s pugnacious persona.
