Elliott Gould, who was a very good friend of Lloyd's, told a friend of mine with whom he is close that he'd asked Lloyd about THE BLACK BOOK because it sounded like such an oddball idea. Lloyd told him that it was hard to keep the actors from overdoing it because it was such an odd mashup. Lloyd said that Anthony Mann was able to pull things back from camp via assiduous effort, but that "nothing he did could rein in Arnold Moss!"... :-)
