The film's origins are equally confusing. Phil Yordan claimed that the scenario was pitched to Republic Pictures, but the studio head Herbert Yates objected to the subject matter. Nonetheless, Yates offered to finance the production elsewhere if Yordan would write the script. Yordan allegedly dictated the script in three days (over a weekend) and shooting began on Monday morning.
Of course, the screen credits list neither Yates or Yordan at all.
