Somewhat shocking to learn that a Producers Releasing Corporation title was nominated for not one, but two Academy Awards (Best Musical Score and Best Song "Cat and the Canary"). The two winners were "Anchors Aweigh" and the "It Might as Well Be Spring" respectively.

The film's origins are equally confusing. Phil Yordan claimed that the scenario was pitched to Republic Pictures, but the studio head Herbert Yates objected to the subject matter. Nonetheless, Yates offered to finance the production elsewhere if Yordan would write the script. Yordan allegedly dictated the script in three days (over a weekend) and shooting began on Monday morning.

Of course, the screen credits list neither Yates or Yordan at all.
