Dan, even for you that's a bit uncharitable, but perhaps it's the sign of the times...the curious ongoing state of the Blackboard really should not be used as a rationale (or rationalization) for anything. If the work has some potential value to illuminate or realign some aspect of our perspective on noir, then it should be undertaken.

--is a wonderful start at building a case for a book-length examination of Spy Noirs and War Noirs: The Hidden Antecedents of Film Noir (and why they are significant...) (the book that you should be writing to cement the notion that gender relations underwent a temporary reversal or "pause" due to the war...and that this was manifested consistent across national cinemas). I urge people to read this essay: if it had been in existence while I was editing the NC e-zine, I would have lobbied hard for it to appear in that publication.

So the effort to take your lists of spy noirs and determine which fit the definition of "conspiracy thriller" might be worthwhile regardless of how many or how few folks are clamoring for it. After all, you didn't do your research on spy noirs/war noirs because anyone here (or anywhere else) was clamoring for it.

In any event, the lists are easy to appropriate from the Film Noir File site, and so I've done so below. Now anyone interested in the topic will have a reasonably complete list of films that are candidates for this film sub-type and can scrub the list based on some (hopefully consistent) criteria.

I would suggest that one aspect of such a definition might be internationalism. Do the conspirators coordinate their efforts across national boundaries? If the answer is yes, they're on the list for sure. From there, the question of intra-national subversive activities can then be addressed.

I've retained a feature of Dan's spy noir work that reminds us just how many films of this type he's unearthed as part of his research. The "DH" that you see to the right of various film titles represents the films that he rediscovered and added to the lists of "spy noirs." With Dan's list and the original list posted by Mike all together in one place, the ability to do this work is expedited for anyone so inclined, regardless of the liminal status of the Blackboard.

Note that because of the incredible uptick in spy noirs/war noirs during WWII (a logical development, n'est-ce pas?), I've provided line breaks after each year in the 1934-1948 time frame. (The distribution of these films during those years is an almost perfect bell curve that peaks in 1942, which makes sense if we think internationally and recall that WWII really began in 1939.)
