FUGITIVE FROM THE PAST takes him further into the world occupied by Kurosawa and others of that generation, right on the cusp of Kobayashi, Teshigahara and Yoshida. But he retains a humanistic edge that many of the others (Oshima, Suzuki, etc.) pretty much abandoned in the 60s.
