Would I put LARCENY in my top 25 as some have suggested? No, not hardly—but it can stake a credible claim for being near the top of Bill Bowers’ noir screenplays, coming in behind PITFALL and CRY DANGER. Those two films have screenplays that transcend their specific plot structures and feature dialogue that is much more seamlessly integrated into real-life situations (i.e. the wisecracks have more depth), but LARCENY shines by giving Duryea a role with more nuance and setting Payne up with a brooding persona that would lead him to even more memorable work in the years to follow. We need a good DVD of it yesterday...
