I think that if a scholar would take the entire list seriously as what people think of as neo-noir and tabulate the kinds of content we see over time, objectively, some very interesting stylized facts might emerge. The real maturatioon of neo-noir in terms of color palette lighting and other techniques comes more in the 90s and later. The more troubling content about identity is relatively recent, but there are always some earlier proto-movies. The action film has changed. The role of police has changed. The roles of females have broadened, and the male protagonist has altered considerably, not always but quite often, from the strong types to become a mess. But I think one has to count up the various types to get an accurate idea, and to do that one has to get into a thousand movies.
