Re: James Caan's Philip Marlowe?
I would drop Gould a notch in favor of Mitchum. I really enjoyed his performance in "Farewell, My Lovely" and regret that he was not cast in the role five years sooner. His second turn in the updated version of "The Big Sleep" suffers in comparison and has some of the same problems of "The Long Goodbye" times two. The time frame and location have been shifted and not for the better. The blackmail subplot about pornographic books and photos makes little or no sense after the Sexual Revolution.
