I’m not sure that the author is correct that grifting is “distinctly” American, just as film noir is not “distinctly” American (despite the efforts to characterize it that way), but it is true that American con men and charlatans take on a different tone than their international counterparts, with cults of personality and public spectacle above and beyond what we see in gypsies and other organized but “unaffiliated” shady types. And where to fit in the black marketeer? Nonetheless, an interesting read...
