The locales in Iceland, standing in for Minnesota, are excellent. That drew me back. So did Whitaker's odd accent, which actually sounds Canadian. Jeremy Renner and Julia Stiles are first-rate. Peter Coyote is always interesting. Then there is this confusing plot, which I now understand. But it has something as a noir. It's hardly a depiction that's representative of what people without means will do to get money, but that's how noir is mostly. We ordinarily do not encounter the crimes depicted. There are a few little vignettes thrown in, including a seduction of Whitaker by a full-figured barmaid/bar owner. The action is limited, but violent when it occurs - several smashups. Renner provides threat throughout.
