Dan, very well done, your comments. The point is China was most definitely an important American ally in the Pacific war. The Chinese were treated quite respectfully, with great empathy during this time. I don't believe the war in China and for the Burma road were as forgotten, though, as you seem to be pointing out. In Britain and among serious historians in America, the war in Burma/China and the Japanese war with China are very much present. Anyway, the war between China and Japan plays a huge role in contemporary politics. See, as an example, Richard McGregor's Asia's Reckoning: China, Japan, and the Fate of U.S. Power in the Pacific Century. Those other writers you cite are out to lunch.
