Re: Noir Top 25: Results of A Revision(ist) Effort
Thanks much, Mike. I'm thinking that the sub-group that worked on the revision exercise all had some added affinity for 50s noir that is greater than the norm, which probably also explains the shifts that occur in the rankings. Not saying that as necessarily a bad thing, because there is something of a tendency to think of American noir in the 50s as somehow lesser, whereas the best of it continues to push boundaries (NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and THE BIG COMBO are just two examples of that). It is lesser mostly in that there is less of it, and it is surrounded by more flamboyant exploitation fare, which tends to swallow it all up in people's minds, I think.
Here is your list:
1-5: Out of the Past, Double Indemnity, The Big Sleep, Night of the Hunter, On the Waterfront
6-10: Criss Cross, The Asphalt Jungle, The Killers, In A Lonely Place, Laura
11-15: The Maltese Falcon, Sunset Blvd., Murder My Sweet, Mildred Pierce, Postman Always Rings Twice
16-20: Raw Deal, The Set-Up, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, Pitfall, Kiss of Death
21-25: Force of Evil, Kiss Me Deadly, The Big Heat, Odds Against Tomorrow, D.O.A.
HM: The Killing, The Big Combo, Act of Violence, Brute Force, Sweet Smell of Success, This Gun For Hire, The Woman in the Window, Thieves' Highway, The Blue Dahlia, House of Strangers
