I just use real patient sanding. I will also strengthen the bow with sanding sealer so that way I'm not too destructive when the "point" starts to form.

I'm starting to gravitate towards bass wood. It's getting cheap enough to warrant it. The balsa is pretty cheap which is why I use it.
