    Most reviled opposition player?

Posted by Poster from the pastUser icon on 29/10/2026, 19:40:04

The mention of Richard Brodie reminded me of just how much I disliked him at the time and got me wondering if there's any other opposition players more reviled by Luton fans?

I'm guessing Troy Deeney must be up there and I remember David Speedie getting quite a lot of stick back in the day. Most of the original Wimbledon team with a special mention for John Fashanu. Who else?

I was at Everton away around Christmas 86/87 when Peter Reid committed a shocking tackle on Ricky when he was actually off the pitch, pure petulance cos Hill had just made him look silly by taking the ball off him and then beating him. Rocky was stretchered off I think but I’ve always despised Reid after that.
Not sure if that was the year when Ricky came back just before the Littlewoods Cup final but my memory isn’t what it was!!

That was a year later, I was at that game. Ricky’s next match was the Littlewoods Cup Final.

Yeah I thought it might be. Wasn’t sure 86 or 87 but thanks for confirming, amazing that his next game was at Wembley!

I’ve put this on here before but the worse foul I ever saw was Pat van den Hauw on Ian Dowie at White Hart Lane - December 1990 I think. VDH absolutely clattered him from behind putting him about 4ft up the air. The following day there was a picture in one of the newspapers where Dowie appeared to be ‘floating’, horizontally, 4ft above the ground with VDH stood behind him with his right leg forward. It was a brilliant picture which I’m surprised has never since seen the light of day. VDH was red carded obviously and later in the game Gascoigne did something similar to David Preece putting him about 3ft over the touchline and right in front of where I was stood. Miraculously - and I think purely because of who Gascoigne was - he wasn’t even booked.

VDH should have been arrested for assault, nevermind a red card.

Mo Johnstone. Couldn’t believe Basher got away with knocking him cold. The referee decided he’d not seen anything. Not into violence but it was funny. Got what he deserved.

That would have been my choice too, complete bottle job by the ref, he was right next to it.

I believe Basher enjoys being reminded of it almost as much as THAT goal.

That Oldham chap mentioned on here a short while back, Roger Wilde. Not many players cause a pitch invasion.

Beat me to it on that one, Wylde should have been sent off that day.

I’ll throw another one in from slightly before that - Paul Clark of Brighton who broke (well, shattered) Lil Fuccilo’s leg. Whilst Lil did go on to have a reasonable career he was never quite the same player after that double break - I’m convinced that if that match at Brighton hadn’t happened he’d have gone on to have a stellar career. He was that good.

I don’t recall Clark playing at Luton other than the return match at Luton at the end of that season but I remember him getting absolutely slaughtered.

Sharing the same name as him I was in the oak road that day and when the players came out the tunnel there was an almighty rendition of WE HATE PAUL CLARK AND WE HATE PAUL CLARK. remember thinking to myself what the f@ck until I realised and then promptly joined in.

Good call. Although if we extend it to anyone on the pitch then John Martin the ref at the FA-cup semi final defeat v Everton. 😡 Angered me more than any opposition player!

Didn't Fucillo last just one game for us as manager and wasn't that a 4-0 defeat away to Brighton in the cup? If yes he must seriously dislike Brighton!?
