Whilst I agree it appears that way sadly it’s because unscrupulous people abuse the system.
You hear horrendous stories of people continuing to claim dead people’s pension and similarly abusing disability benefits.
I do find it strange that we seem so well documented these days that local authorities can’t join the dots. Ie : when you die your Nat ins number is cancelled which sends out a message to all government departments.
Similarly I don’t see why state pension can’t be means tested as anyone with income over £100k has to complete a tax return.

Yes but surely we could save money . . . someone with MS that qualifies . . . just a check, as you point out, that they are still with us should do, surely?

State pension is a tough one because people have "paid in" and those payments are directly linked to how much you get out.

It would be a brave party that did that I think.

Exactly- In NAG’s case as she clearly points out the disability isn’t going away we should be able to keep certain things running and only when circumstances change should it be necessary to involve admin.
Technology can do wonderful things except when it involves our local authorities….
I don’t think it would ..if you are completing a tax return with £100k income on then imo you can afford to forgo the state pension.Similarly with free public transportation.
Not a vote loser for anyone as the majority of those I suspect would be Tory voters anyway.
You could balance it up by stopping ni contributions after 35 years ( or a proportion of them ) which imo is grossly unfair as you can’t increase what you get paid in state pension.

Yes, and the way that public IT projects are contracted surely has to be an area to be looked at!

I think the state pension is genuinely an awkward one but yes that's true though as we know you can of course fudge your affairs where the 100k income is concerned. Again, our tax system needs to be tightened considerably I think.

I still haven't forgiven the Tories for the fiasco of the functional assessments that they put people through.
My sister who has learning difficulties had to suffer humiliation to prove she deserved her benefit even after her doctor sent a letter to say it would cause unnecessary mental stress.

The worse part of these assessments is that they cost more than the benefits bill.

All because of the press and social media always pointing at those at the bottom who might be defrauding the country of a few quid a week , whilst those in a powerful positions rob the country to their hearts content.

The point is that even though people have a GP's or a consultant's certificate saying that they are unfit to work due to a disabling condition, the DWP insist on them having an "assessment" to verify this.
It's ludicrous and completely unnecessary.

It's like asking a person with one leg "Are you sure you haven't got an extra leg somewhere?".

But in all seriousness I have always thought a good government is one that helps those that find it difficult to help themselves for whatever reason.

In my lifetime I have not experienced a Tory government that has come anywhere near doing that.

Maybe there is time yet, but I am getting on a bit.

Well you ain’t trying hard enough then - that or she doesn’t have a disability. We had the same issue with my 90yr old mother - me and my sister got involved and it was sorted within a couple of days.

Let me give you some advice. The trick is not to get angry. Stay calm, be polite and civil and you might just find that they’ll help you. In my elderly mother’s case both me and my sister wrote courteous emails referencing our mother and explaining the situation. The situation was resolved within a couple of days.
