    Stealing work phone number

Posted by Not that blokeUser icon on 7/10/2026, 10:38:03

I thought this was an interesting question:

In short, does a company actually own the telephone numbers associated with their devices?

My missus is leaving her current job. She's going to another company in sort of (some of) the same market(s) so there are non-compete issues and she's not allowed to start with the new company for three months after her notice period ending. She's only ever had a company phone but will need a phone once she's left her current employer. She has a handset and there's plenty of sim only deals but to save the ballache of sending "this is my new number" to all of her (personal) contacts, could she just port her current number or does her employer actually own it?

Other options include the new company giving her a phone as soon as she needs one but this might be legally murky. Her new boss is absolutely certain to have such requests as "can you just...". But then he could, anyway, regardless of which phone or number she's using.

Obviously, her current employer is not going to love her being able to be contacted by current customers but she's not really customer-facing anyway.

Any ideas or issues I haven't thought of?

Do you mean she is in the “ garden “ for three months.ie: being paid by her old company before starting at the new one.
You can’t stop someone starting at a competitor and by default have three months of not earning . You can and she probably has a non compete clause which stops her contacting her old clients for a period of time. I have just been through it and had 6 months in the garden and have six months non compete…no judge would uphold a contract which forbids you for working.( unless you are being paid not to from your previous company).
I refuse to have a work phone for the very reason you raise…used to have two but it’s a shag.

They have been paying the bill, so they own the number.

She could ask them if she can keep it but they will probably tell her to get fucked. Fair do's.

Just get a new phone now and start switching over.

I have often thought the same. I have been at my current company for over 22 years and my mobile is a works phone and always has. If i left, i would like to keep the number but in order for that to happen, i believe you need the PUK code or something, which is something only the bill payer can get.
It's not just the hassle of telling everyone your new number, its the fact the number is registerd with banks, credit card companies etc, so all that would need changing if you change your number

Hadn't fully considered that last bit. That's an actual ballache. I envy anyone who has a day to just spend changing their phone number on their various accounts almost as much as I envy anyone who could actually remember them all.

Same happened to me when I worked for a company in Eire.

But yeah simple thing is get a new phone, it’s not that much effort in the long term, from memory I done all the utilities and doctors and insurance in less than a day .

Personal contacts as and when, something of nothing really..

                Same happened to me
My work mobile number had been my only contact number for the last 10-15 years , personal and banking etc
They outright refused to allow me to have PUK code ( wankers )
But anyway , I rose above their pettyness and got a new number, updated all important contacts and forgot to give new number to people I didn’t want to hear from !!!

Most of the personal contacts are probably on WhatsApp so create a message about the number change and send it to all of her contacts.

If she has clients on there she needs to be very careful doing that as it will be a breach of her contract.

Yes. I have often wondered how many breadcrumbs, by number not by weight, would be required to make up a slice of standard medium sliced bread. Keeps me up all night.

                  For fucksake get a grip.

Why should they have to set up a new number for someone when they have an existing one they can transfer to someone else?

They don't. When you port your phone number, your sim card is automatically assigned a new number.

Jesus, just get a new phone and new sim and tell her mates her new number.

I assume the co. will assign the number to someone else when she leaves, I would be very surprised if he could have it still
