    Power Court

Posted by GoddersUser icon on 4/10/2026, 12:51:07

Just casually looking over Belgium on Google Maps and noticed that Anderlecht have a vast bank of solar panels the the roofs of their 4 stands. What a great thing! I do hope that renewable energy is being utilised for power court in a similar vein especially given the uncertainty surrounding energy in the UK.

Wouldn’t solar panels cause glint and glare issues for aircraft that fly above the stadium at least on the scale we’d need them? Recycling the hot air our fans generate during games would be a profitable energy source. Could sell it on to local energy companies😁

Solar panels were on the roof in the original visuals from September 2024, but are not on the most recent visuals from 2020developments.co.uk (see bottom of post for comparison).

In the original submission from September 2024 it was stated that were were trying to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating (second highest rating).

          For context..
"BREEAM is used to specify and measure the sustainability performance of buildings, ensuring that projects meet sustainability goals and continue to perform optimally over time."

Energy counts towards 19% of that weighting for a BREEAM Excellent weighting, so solar plays a massive part in that.

If they have dropped the solar panels then it could be that they are no longer going for a BREEAM Excellent rating because of the costs associated with it at a time where they are having to cut their cloth on the build.

I think it should be mandatory that commercial buildings generate a reasonable amount of renewable energy personally.

And like in France major open car parks should have canopies of them. Where I used to work was a very big site and they have installed 8,500 solar panels over their huge car parks which will generate approx 40% of the site's electricity requirements.

Solar panels and wind farms are the way forward

For us, I can't help but think we should be looking more at tidal, things is, it is rather expensive but there is a lot of potential there and it is genuinely constant power.

The downside to tidal is that it can trap marine life either side of the barrier whoch could end up problematic to delicate shoreline ecosystems.

Otherwise, as we're surrounded by coastline, yes, todal would seem ideal.

                        Have you come across TidalWatt?
I helped with a presentation for them and was very impressed.
Seems mad that we're surrounded by water, have some very powerful currents, and don't make the most of them.

No, I hadn't, some of their figures look a little suspect to me - costs by different power source - but they look to really have something. A lot of the really expensive tidal stuff relies on big lagoons etc which is one of the reasons for the expense.

They, at the very least, look well worth investigation then we could overcome some of the problems of distribution too.

Only sad thing is that they are Brazilian, what an opportunity the UK has squandered by not investing in developing this kind of technology.

We helped them pitch to the previous UK government. Didn't get anywhere really.

There seems to be a real lack of desire to fully investigate tidal power. Perhaps because of the clumsiness and size of other concepts. This is something different though.

If they can prove it then I would have though it would be an obvious strong candidate.

On the face of it, it's almost a no brainer.

(Yes I know, obviously you'd neeed to look into it far more).

I was thinking about water powered Mills from rivers also

I have been upto some Scottish hills covered in wind power, they are enormous and the power collection units are not that big

There is a solar "farm" up the A1 near Biggleswade. Also a facility that turns waste into energy at the former brick pit at Brickhill.

Yes, not sure there's quite the same potential there but anything that is fairly constant is gold dust basically.
