1.5% more than when Truss “crashed” the economy. Yet the media seem silent on it currently. All of the lights on the dashboard are flashing red, but Andy is asleep at the wheel, too busy poking his nose into the Man City shit show, waxing lyrical over bus fares, and trying to turn the country into something his late father would be proud of , rather dealing with the here and now.
That’s nothing. The OP on this follows blokes to their seats at away games making cat noises. All because he’d lost a pet which his wife took particularly hard.
Yes, the gilt yield is higher. But in 2022 the issue wasn't simply the gilts percentage, it was the speed they rose and the subsequent liquidity crisis in pension funds, which led to forced gilt selling and the BoE having to step in.
Today's higher yield doesn't, on its own, mean the same thing is happening.
Still, it's not great for government borrowing and financial headroom.
I wouldn’t take too much notice of him mate. What he knows about gilts he could write on the back of a postage stamp.
Gilts are high for two reasons - inherited government debt and an impending energy crisis due to the conflict in the Middle East (thanks Trump and Netanyahu). The last time they were over 6% was in 1998 when government finances were pretty rosy though there was a pretty serious financial crisis in Asia.
