Reverse or negative effects of sponsorship?

Posted by Nick NBHUser icon on 28/9/2026, 22:07:49

Wonder how much of a thing it is?

I saw a pack of "happy egg company" eggs next to another brand. Remembering they used to sponsor the scum no chance i was buying them. Similarly if i was into spread betting no chance i`d use stake as a gambling provider.

How widespread is this level of pettiness? I`ve heard of scum fans refusing to fly out of Luton airport- Luton fans refusing to have tehir kids born at w&tford general etc?

Definitely something in this. I thought a sensible approach was what CR Smith did in the 80s by sponsoring both Celtic and Rangers at the same time. As for watford I boycott anything they are sponsored by (almost irrelevant in terms of gambling though for obvious reasons 😉. But for firms like Toshiba, I give them a 5 year "cleansing" period after which I'm happy to buy their products again.

I don't even know who sponsors Watfraud so it would be difficult to boycott them. It's all a bit daft really

I definitely agree with this. I used to like Toshiba years ago but never touched them again once they gave money to the scum. I avoid anyone who sponsored them, anything yellow, Elton John songs, even tried to avoid my little one seeing Lion King (she did see it in the end but thankfully was never too fussed). Normal.

For some years, Celtic and Rangers did joint sponsorships for that reason.

I wonder the same about the so called ‘principles’ of our CEO. I mean, what if say if it suddenly became apparent that there might be a shortfall in the proposed funding of the new stadium? Might he be tempted to row back on his previous stance and accept sponsorship from a betting firm?

              Purely a hypothetical, obviously….

My personal view is that the Luton FC board should be applauded for this stance on betting sponsorship...too many people young and old get into serious financial hardship due to gambling..I work with a chap who has serious debt issues..all stared with a tv advert for I think it was £10 free bet

Given that the Club's financial situation was extremely hairy during the COVID lockdown and the board didn’t change the gambling sponsorship policy even then, I think you can be quite confident it won't change in future either

Not a dig but I’m not entirely sure a season of reduced revenue even begins to compare to a scenario that potentially loads an unspecified level of debt which has only recently come to light with no explanation or timetable of repayment after years of being told the opposite.

Sooner or later there’s gonna be day of reckoning on this. And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one thinking it.

I'm going to suspect that the sponsors of Wycombe's away stand get pissed on continually and only because of their sponsorhip, of course!
