You are the lino

I reckon this is an easier one.
Direct free-kick on the edge of the box, lad three yards offside standing at least next to the keeper if not in front. I flag as soon as the kick's taken because I can't think of a way that he can't be active/interfering with play. Everything goes ballistic.
The ref can always overrule me as he did when I flagged some lad who didn't then become involved but he was happy with the decision, I did check.

You describe a scenario where the offside player is clearly seeking to gain an advantage by being in that position, in distracting the GK, therefore you are correct in raising the flag for offside.

Why not keep the flag down until you see the outcome. Its just about waiting a few seconds. You don't say that the free kick went in the goal?
If the free kick goes wide, just play on from a goal kick, if keeper saves it cleanly, play on, no need for you to make a decision.
Only flag if the ball goes in the goal or the attacking team gain some sort of advantage, corner, possession ect.

But you said that you flagged as soon as it was taken so, at that stage, you didn't know that it had gone in.

He’s offside at the moment the ball is played and whether it goes in the goal or not. (Seeking to gain an advantage by being in that position)

Yes I did. The shot went straight in so, given rea lion time, both things are almost exactly the same.

I`d agree. Mind you the offside rule like the handball rule seems to change every bloody season As does the interpretation of attempted murder vs a fair challenge
