Because people don't want to have a pint of beer accidentally spilled over them by someone celebrating a goal over-enthusiastically? And it would save the staff having to pick up empty/half empty plastic glasses from under the seats.
In all the years since the no alcohol ban has existed and in all the years since then you've sat in your seat do you think everytime oh I wish I could have a pint in my hand whilst watching the game. I doubt it. But only you know your own mind.
Probably shouldn't be the LAW, but in reality it will just be such a pain with people constantly going back and forth to the bar and toilet. Nobody cares at the cricket because the "action" is so stop-start anyway, but football isn't like that (except when Wycombe are playing, hoho).
I bet if the law is changed then clubs will change their own rules on their property to prevent it anyway.
Football is more stop-start than it used to be, at certain levels anyway - VAR has seen to that. Maybe every review is a perfect opportunity to nip to the bar. Then the more reviews there are, the more drinks sales there will be. Which will inevitably lead to more reviews because, you know, greed...
Every non-league club allows it as Farhat says below Step 1 and there's literally no footage anywhere of any fan celebrating a goal by throwing a pint in the air
Plenty of clubs below Step 1 get 2-3k plus at games - Hereford, Darlington etc.. the grounds are not as big as KR so the crowd still have other people standing around them - the point is they are not celebrating goals by throwing beer in the air
The Legislation: The Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985 made it illegal to drink alcohol—or be drunk—within direct sight of the playing area during designated football matches.
The Reason: It was introduced by Margaret Thatcher's government and Home Secretary Leon Brittan to curb widespread football hooliganism.
I’m always asking for the champers at half time but the plebs never have any. No chance of getting any even if I could drink it and face the pitch. Modern football for you. Outrageous.
In all the excitement, as a non drinker, I'd be mightily upset if someone tossed their beer in the air during a goal celebration or a penalty saved. I couldn't think of anything worse.
Maybe the solution is to have an alcoholics pen in one section of the ground so those with drinking problems and/or social anxiety can be herded together away from everybody else
