James Cunliffe stats
Posted by Shutupya on 21/9/2026, 12:26:32
On They tried to kill us of Pod...
Stats dammed stats ... Goes on about unbeaten run in an effort to defend Jack .... Neglects to mention the one stat that is most prominent in most supporters minds.... League position
Also not a stat but trying to justify against the Championship promotion side under Edwards and that managed by Nathan then Mick in League 1 ...simple question, which provided the supporters with more entertainment, either of them or now?

He wasn't claiming that we're anywhere near as good as the other unbeaten runs, but rather that the reaction to three defeats this season has largely been well over the top.
Take the small sample size of the last five games out of it, and you don't think 15 games unbeaten and playing good football for the first time in three years was acceptable?
Whether you or James C are correct or not, the one question I have is, say we sack Wilshere (which we won't nor shouldn't), then what?
We've recruited for his style, we're building for his way of playing. To sack him and not bring in someone who wants to play in a similar way will just lumber us with a manager who is working with someone else's squad and who wants to rip up the plan/style again. And then it's year zero. If this is our style now, if this is us, we have to stick with it and recruit accordingly. I'd have preferred a version of Nathan Jones-ball but the club have obviously decided that isn't for us for whatever reason
Wilshere's football is desperately dull at times but I'm still hopeful that the 2nd half against Reading will become the norm rather than the exception. The trouble is, with the style he wants to play, you have to have exceptional footballers relative to the level. We don't have that
Besides with our record of managerial appointments, it's hardly filling me with confidence that the next man would be any good
"The trouble is, with the style he wants to play, you have to have exceptional footballers relative to the level. We don't have that" And unless we are willing to spend large amounts of money I suspect we probably never will, in many ways this is where Graeme Jones fell down as well.
Yes, exactly that. And, yep, G Jones being a perfect example of a manager trying to play a way with footballers who are not capable of doing so.
And, yes, you generally need money to buy players that can play that way. Otherwise you're desperately hoping your current players develop (like at Cardiff last year when their younger players stepped up) and that is not a guarantee, of course
Even if we did end up with those players at L1 level would they then be good enough in the Championship? This is the fundamental flaw of the current trend of possession based football it favours the clubs with the larger resources who've picked off the quality. Not saying it was ever thus but it's dull and boring when you're found out. I find it very hard to enjoy or get behind. Watching wingers take on full backs or centre forwards tussling with centre backs is surely more exciting.
I agree MC .... But Jack needs help, it's a question of how long do we persist with a plan A possession based game with if results do not improve. The states target was promotion, I hope I am wrong but I have seen nothing yet to suggest that's the direction of travel we are heading in.... In a perfect world we would play pretty possession based football but be able to mix it with the more physical teams in the division.. at present we are not doing neither
As an aside ,,, how long if the current trend continues until serious questions about Jack can be asked in your view?
We have to stick with Plan A as we've recruited for it and Wilshere probably doesn't even know how to coach any other style of play anyway. And are the players even capable of playing another way?
I don't disagree with much of what you say. I am not enjoying what I'm seeing. But the club employed Wilshere, I presume, knowing what his preferred way of playing is and, I'm also presuming, that they thought that was the right way to go to get promoted. So, the club are going to look pretty daft if they end up sacking him after a year or so. And even dafter if they then bring in someone who wants to play in another way.
If Wilshere's style is what we now want to be and what our DNA/identity will be in the long run, we should have built slowly towards that and evolved instead of trying to change things 'overnight'. I dunno what is asked in job interviews with managerial candidates but that would be one of my questions - "You have a preferred style of play but, on day one, you don't have the players to play that way. What do you do? What is your short term and longer term plan?"
I am with you,but unfortunately results are everything in modern football .... I think instead of saying promotion is the target we should have said we are looking to build a certain identity and style of play which we understand may take time, we want a return to the championship as soon as possible but realise this will require some patience from all. Our long term future is currently in Jacks tenure and we will all have lto support him through ups and downs. Setting the goal of promotion whilst changing the ethos was either blind optimism or stupidity
It is a bit premature to be sacking Wilshere. But it's also inconceivable that the board will put up with poor performances indefinitely and if things don't improve he will be gone.
Another relevant stat (IMHO) is that whilst Bradford are clearly a strong side, they didn't seem all that much better than last season, when we beat them 2-1, and it could easily have been 3-1 or 4-1 - Gideon missed a couple of great chances. How can we have gone backwards since then?
In boxing terms, I'd be interested in the pound-for-pound stats. The Bradford side were all tall strong lads. Neufville's clearly been in the gym, and whilst Saracevic is a bit of a bruiser, they did seem to out-muscle us. Notts County and even Orient were similar. Do our boys need to spend a bit more time in the Brache gym, given what L1 is like?
Wiki has Walsh 5ft 6ins and Gore 5ft 7ins, even if that's slightly on the lower side they are small. Add to that 2 young midfielder players wide of them. Is there any wonder why we are out muscled?
