Shows what can be done when you’re prepared to put some money behind your squad.

Given I can only think of two of our premier league squad (Barkley and Ogbene) that have made a premier league appearance since our relegation, it would suggest that we would have had to spend a lot more money than we actually had to spend to have had a realistic chance of survival. Yes, we had the unexpected advantage of the points deductions to Forest and Everton, but even if we had stayed up there is no chance (in my mind) that we were good enough to stay up again as we had very few players of true top flight quality. Getting back into the Championship and having the occasional flirt with another truly magical season is about the best we can hope for unless a billionaire fancies wasting a fuck load of his/her money for no good reason.

I wonder what % of teams that put some money behind their squad actually stayed up?
The truth is simple. If it was complicated, everyone would understand it.

More importantly, what % of teams put some money behind their squad to stay up, we didn't.

Burnley did, both times. Shall we have a look at what position in the Premier League they currently hold . . .

If you look at what they have spent and received in transfers over the last 5 years they are @ £50m ahead…that doesn’t include Money received from being in the prem twice… Think they have done better than us….

Maybe on fees but . . .
Anyway, why go back five years?

They are a division above us have made £50m plus prem money whereas we have spanked it all and a division below them .. what matrix would you like bro compare … better kit .
Ties in with them going up twice and tee gates twice and of course covers our trip to the Prem …
Pointing out your analysis on them spending money isn’t great one ..

Well given how much Premier League money they have invested over a much greater number of years the value in their squad was already higher to start with.
And we've not spunked it all have we?

True but the original point was about spending versus not spending.. if you look at the value of their squad versus ours very little comparison. They spent … we didn’t … they are in a better position than us . Having said that if we were comfortably mid champ I would have said we did exactly the right thing!!
Re: Hull
Posted by MG on 13/9/2026, 01:09:42, in reply to "Re: Hull"
Well yes, but when you consider what their wage bill must have been like on top they have spent it all. And we spent a lot of it on PC of course.
My key point here is that if we had of tried to splash the cash in that January window it would most likely have not resulted in us staying up. Getting Premier League quality players in a January window is incredibly expensive.

We will never know…Sunderland have done pretty well and Hull have made a reasonable start….

Yes but they have more revenue generally, especially Sunderland.
Like you say though, we will never know. It could be that we would have plucked out some utter gem who could have made the difference I susppose.
Still, it's late and I'm done for the day!

Generally that season both our team and squad were 50% old and 50% new players, so I'd beg to differ.
The truth is simple. If it was complicated, everyone would understand it.
