Hatters Heritage - On this day

The Hatters have played 22 matches on 11th September, with the first being in 1897, on what was a significant and historic match in the history of the club.

The match was a Division Two game against Gainsborough Trinity and marked our first match in the Football League, as well our first match at our new ground in Dunstable (following 12 years playing at Dallow Lane; now Dallow Road). A 4-0 win in front of 4,000 supporters (with the first goal being scored by Frederick Elkins, only a “couple of minutes” in to the game) boded well for our future in the Football League. Our last match on this day took place in 2021.

Another match of significance took place 44 years ago, which for the generation of supporters who were there was one of the most entertaining and memorable League games at the top level of English football. A thrilling 3-3 draw away at Liverpool (with 3 different players taking the goalkeeper shirt during the match) announced our team to the top teams in Division 1.

4 players have made their debut on this day and they are:

Tommy Little (1897). Scoring the second goal, at our first match at Dunstable Road and in the Football League, on his debut made him an instant hero.
    Thomas Moore (1909)
    Billy Stark (1965)
    Viv Halom (1971)

3 players have been born on this day and they are:

    Jack Taylor (1924)
    Janos Kovacs (1985)
    Jake Woolley (1993)

Finally today cannot pass without reflection on the events of 25 years ago in New York, which for those who are old enough to be aware of its significance, will forever mark a time when our memories would be etched with those images of both the aircraft crashing in to the “Twin Towers” and their eventual collapse. RIP all those who died as a result of the terrorist plot that occurred on that day.

I remember Luke Berry tripping over a TV microphone behind the goal whilst celebrating his second goal in that Blackburn game.
