    Thoughts on today

Posted by GoddersUser icon on 15/8/2026, 22:26:06

First of all I admit that I didn't get to see the whole game due to work commitments but I probably saw about 2/3 of it; most of the first half and most of the second.

I thought, despite being 3-1 down we still, overall, played some decent stuff and if it wasn't for some diabolical defending we would have been very comfortably level at least. We had some serious brain fart moments; Palmer giving the ball away and sinking to his knees rather than backtracking for their 2nd and Kal at fault for 1st and 3rd.

Second half, having survived an early scare, we took the game straight to them. Two quick fire goals by Palmer and the game then, from what I saw, appeared to peter out before we really went for the win rather than settle for the point or even collapse.

    But;
what seemed different was that despite a few wobbles in the first half we tried to keep our composure. Our heads didn't drop when they might have done previously.

Did Wilshere give the team talk of the season or did we just get lucky? Well giving Reading a chance within a couple of minutes of the restart wasn't, I'm sure, in his team talk! Maybe we got a bit of luck there?

Superb double from Palmer being in the right place to fire home, and brilliant build up play from Richards, and Wells, to set him up for the second. At times we cut through them like a hot knife through butter. It was a joy to watch.

Kodua was unlucky hitting the bar from his shot, Richards fluffed his lines for Kodua to sidefoot into the corner. It was definitely coming in the last 15 minutes.

I would say that that come back is a bit of a statement against a team that will do well this season. Will they make the play offs? I'm not sure but there was so much to enjoy today which makes me even more confident that we are going up this season. The manner of the win; the grit and determination along with the skill and guile; the mixing it up of precise passing with longer passed.

This is going to be a great season!

It’s the sort of match that wins you championships. Usually that is said later in the season, but to turn 0 into 3 on day 1 is a great effort.

I agree that we were good for the first 30 minutes and it was just the individual errors that let ourselves down.

HT came at the right time, because after the third Marriott goal they did lose their heads and the composure had gone a bit.

I thought we were poor defensively first half, and every time they attacked we seemed to have desperate attempts to get rid, but a few decent moments going forward. Second half we just looked so much more settled at the back, and even more so once Marriot went off. Brilliant one touch football going forward.

Kal was appalling for the first goal though even then I really don't quite know what Keeley was doing. I think Marriott surprised him.

Only the ref was to blame for the third one though.

Am I the only one who thinks Richards passed it to Kodua?

Nope. Not what you'd call an orthodox pass but he got what he needed to get on it to slide it across goal. I'm fairly sure that Kodua wasn't even the only one running in but it seems like that was who Jake was looking for.

In that case it was a world class pass given the fact that it had to get past two defenders to get to him, and that Richards was in a much better scoring position. Yes there was a defender coming in on Richards but he could have sidestepped him and tapped it in.

No he toe poked it to him, it was definitely intentional.

I believe we are a decent centre forward away from a top 2 finish

I thought Marriott was superb. They were notably weaker after he went off in the 65th minute.

outlaws is not the barometer of sanity. You're either Luton full tilt or you are nothing. We have spunked way too much money on shite. The end.

Agree completely. Can’t for the life understand why we’ve never made any effort to get him back - he’s a proven scorer at this level, and Wrexham now clearly don’t need/want his services…

                          🤣

I read that earlier! Not quite in the same vein but the season we got promoted I knew we were going up once we won at Norwich. I think I said so on here at the time. Similarly I'm utterly convinced we're going up this season.
