Benny and Kal

Kal looked far more comfortable with Benny on the pitch
Benny started his playing career as a left back hence has more defensive savvy than Lawrence.
Kal needing help isn’t a good sign but it was noticeable that Kal was better with Benny playing in front, including making the original pass that created the winner.
I just hope we are still looking for a Ashby type to come in and provide proper competition at left back. Maybe JJ can then go out on loan and get some proper game time?
The mistake for the first Reading goal was appalling and we simply can’t have another season littered with Kal’s individual errors. He has had his day at Wembley, promotion is far more important than any player loyalty.
Winning is everything - more than you have

You’d think JJ needs to start nailing a place down.
I actually thought in the GAE game that he may end up further up the pitch. He’s got the poise and the stature and the ball playing ability to be a good DM.

including making the original pass that created the winner.
That was Johnston. Yeah im not sure what he was doing in that position either.

Some potentially unfashionable opinions:
Marriot makes that challenge in midfield and it's a foul. He follows through and cleans out Keeley. As a former (many years hence) defender, I think he has to go for it but taking the ball and then the man, in the modern game, is a foul. For balance so is any scenario where 'he gets his shot off' and then gets cut in half.
Naismith embarrassed himself with that pathetic dive. By all means, 'make sure the ref knows it's a foul' when there are covering defenders but when you're on your own, do what needs to done. Clean Lisbie out, there, even. He was already on thin ice with me for shit like the weak back pass in the first half.
One important point is the resilience to keep going and come back. The greater is to not give shit goals away and if he keeps doing it, hook him.

I'd agree with you on the Naismith 'foul'. He's gone to ground far to easily and the ref hasn't bought the dive.
Yep, there were two hands on his back but nowhere near enough for him to tumble over.
Sometimes you just need to clean out the winger and hit row Z. I really like Naismith and think he's integral to the squad but as a starter he really can only reakky play left centre half in a back three.

For a bit of balance - had JJ started LB and made the same mistakes, I don`t think he woudl be blamed as much . He is one of our own , and he deosnt have the experience. Same result though

Or because JJ is still fairly young and relatively inexperienced people may be more forgiving... kal makes the same mistakes over and over and should at his stage of his career know better.
Interesting point that Jack binned off Makosso fairly quickly as he didn't believe he could improve a fairly young player but persists with an older one that keeps making the same mistake... Baffling

I love both of them as technical footballers, but they’re both slower than my Nan, which is an absolute no no as a modern day full back. Particularly as she died twenty years ago.
We need a pacy, mobile left full back.
Did Paul Underwood have kids?

I don't think binning off Makosso was anything to do with not believing that he could improve him as a player.

Maybe .... But my point was more about how baffling his faith in Kal is

he deosnt have the experience which is exactly why he would be cut more slack that Naismith who isn't one of our own and is club captain!

Was it a dive though? It was definitely a push - whether that was enough to make him fall over depends on balance and body strength.
As for hooking him. As much as I don`t think many people would have had a problem (and no obvious replacements on the bench) - its not really Jacks style to hook his captain off - especially in the opening game.
Naismith actually came back well from the reading horror show last season . But our weak links are both fullbacks . And question marks over Keeley.
Bloody hell anyone woudl think we had lost reading that!

They clearly targeted him in the first half (fair enough after the home game last season) . Whether he was better in the 2nd with Benny - was that because Benny was there or because the momentum had shifted?
Think that third gets ruled out by VAR - but still glad we dont have it. Strangely enough that 1st half defensive horror show may actually help us. Analyse the mistakes. Equally coming back down from 3-1 down away teaches good habits although hopefully we wont have to do that too many times

Yes, it should have gone row z but it wasn’t all on him. What call did he have from keeper or centre halves? Keeley was too slow to clear it. It shouldn’t have been an issue but the point is, defending collectively was appalling first half.
Out and out fouled for third
He’s not a left back in a 4. He needs to play centrally

Foul maybe, but going down so easily doesn't always convince the ref. And bear in mind the modified refereeing style adopted at the WC. In similar situations, most refs just let play go on, and I'm sure this approach will be followed in many league games this season.

Good point. I know Lawrence was supposed to be training at city But looked a bit off the pace. I thought JJ looked Good in preseason and think he should be given a go
