Safety first though. DO NOT look directly at the sun without proper glasses / equipment (sunglasses don't cut the mustard either) otherwise you risk not seeing your beloved Hatters again!
Suggest you either see if a local astronomy group are doing anything or knock up a pinhole camera or use a colander! Plenty of instructions on the Interweb.
The Royal Observatory, Greenwich are also doing a live stream on their YouTube channel.
If anyone is in the Peterborough area, some members of the Peterborough Astronomical Society will be at Ferry Meadows this evening with their specialist equipment, so feel free to pop over and see what we are up to.
Echo that. Do not look at the sun even when the eclipse is at the point of maximum shadow. (The fact that Trump did so in 2017 is not evidence of good practice!)
tbh - I wouldn't recommend any "homemade" solutions, including things like stacking sunglasses etc. You may just get lucky and they work, but then again!
Certified solar filters block around 99.999% of the sunlight. There's no guarantee that a homemade effort will achieve the same level of protection.
Not trying to be a killjoy, but its not worth risking your eyesight for when there are the projection methods where you don't have to look directly at the sun that enable you to experience it.
