    Tactics for Saturday

I would go for a classic flat 4-4-2 features two banks of four (defence and midfield) with a strike partnership. Wide midfielders provide width and defensive cover; central midfielders are typically box-to-box. Variations include a diamond midfield (more central control, less natural width).
    Benefits:
    • Defensive solidity and compactness: Two clear banks of four make it easy to stay organised, shift laterally as a unit, and form a low or mid-block that is hard to break down. Sliding and maintaining shape is relatively straightforward.
    • Strike partnership: Two centre-forwards occupy both opposition centre-backs, create combinations, hold-up play, and offer constant presence in the box. This is often missing in single-striker systems and suits complementary pairs (e.g., target man + poacher).
    • Simplicity and clarity of roles: Easy to coach and understand—linear responsibilities suit less tactically sophisticated or newly assembled sides. Transitions from defence to attack can be direct and rapid.
    • Counter-attacking strength: Compact shape + two forwards ready to run channels or receive quickly makes it excellent for vertical, direct play and exploiting space behind high full-backs.
    • Width and cover: Wide midfielders protect full-backs well while providing crossing options.

2 centre midfielders (Walsh and Clark?) would mean we need to rely on Walsh's tackling ability which has had somewhat mixed results in the past.

        Come on Grok, do better.

I'm all for innovation so would start with 2 goalies. If we concede it's jackpot goalie and 11 up top.

I'd go with score more goals than the opposition (or maybe concede fewer, depending on your perspective).

                      Last seasons top scorer Clark.
