One match played today and that was a real humdinger as we made our bow in the Championship with a 3-3 draw at home to Middlesbrough. 5 players were to make their debut for the Hatters (Sluga, Cranie, McManaman & Tunnicliffe from the start and Butterfield as a 60th minute substitute). Sonny Bradley scored an absolute belter to equalise an early away goal, before Martin Cranie scored on his debut to put the Town 2-1 in the lead. An 85th minute equaliser by James Collins then gave the Hatters the share of the spoils, on what had been a pulsating Friday night game in front of the Sky cameras.
2 players have been born on this day.
The first was Tony Godden in 1955, who played 12 games for the Hatters at the end of the 1982-83 season and will forever be remembered as the goalkeeper during our last gasp win at Man City on the last day of the season.
The other was Ashley Grimes in 1957, who made 114 appearances for the Hatters between 1984 - 1989. His name will be indelibly linked with our Littlewoods Cup triumph in 1988. Firstly for his delightful free kick in the second leg of our semi-final match against Oxford Utd and subsequently for the sumptuous cross with his left foot, which led to Brian Stein scoring the Town’s winning goal against Arsenal.
Why he was on the right wing, when he was our left back, perhaps only he will know. However, the fact that his right leg was only used for standing on meant that the cross curved delightfully away from the Arsenal goalkeeper, Lukic, so as to allow Brian Stein to run in on to it and score the winner.
His final game for the Town was also a League Cup Final, although that game in 1989 did not result in the win he, and all Luton supporters, had hoped for.
Several years later, I showed my Rangers-supporting Scottish brother-in-law the video of the whole 1988 final, and he spontaneously said it was one of the best games he had ever seen.
