One match played today and that was 55 years ago in 1971, when we played Colchester away and lost 1-0 in the Watney Cup.
The competition was a pre season tournament that was sponsored by the Watney Mann Company (perhaps more well known at that time due to the Monty Python “ Travel Agent” sketch which repeatedly referred to the phrase “Bleeding Watney’s Red Barrel” in its narrative and which also included mention of Luton). The Cup was competed for between seasons 1970-1973 and featured the 2 teams from divisions 2, 3 & 4 who had scored the most goals and had not been promoted, as well as the 2 top goalscoring teams from the First Division who had not won the league, a cup or were not going to be competing in a European competition that season.
The above game also featured the debut of Robin Wainwright for the Hatters, (mention of whom was made yesterday as being one of the Beds FA ball boys at the 1966 World Cup final 5 years and one day earlier). The match report by the Daily Mirror’s Jack Steggles (which can be read by clicking the relevant match report tab for the game) is somewhat amusing as it states that Robin came on in the 31st minute for Don Gibbons, rather than Don Givens !!! Perhaps Jack had been monkeying about when he sent his report back to the paper.
One player has been born on this day and that was Pat McAuley in 1921, who played 8 games for the Hatters in season 50/51, scoring one goal in a 4-2 win at home to Bury in March 1951.
