The only time that the season started this early was 4 years ago, on 2022. The match will not live long in the memory of those of us that were there, as we drew 0-0 at home to Birmingham. However, 3 players were to make their debut for the club and these were Ethan Horvath in goal, Luke Freeman in midfield and last, but certainly not least, Carlton Morris.
Carlton will forever hold a place in my heart (together with many other fans) as well as the history of the club for scoring our first goal in the Premier League. A month later he, together with Tom Lockyer, was to score in our first ever win in the Premier League; 2-1 away at Everton. What a day/game that was !!! A player who always gave 100% effort for the Hatters and someone I admired greatly for his goals, effort and attitude whilst at the club.
Only one player has been born on this day and that was John “Dixie” Deans who was born 80 years ago today in 1946. He scored 2 goals on his debut at home to Sheffield Utd in August 1976 and would go on to make a further 14 appearances for the club, up until Christmas of that year, scoring a further 4 goals. However, an anecdote I have will perhaps explain why he didn’t play for the Club after that date. It was the day after Boxing Day 1976 and I was driving down a very deserted M1 with a car full of fellow Hatters fans on our way to watch us play Leyton Orient. I looked in the rear view mirror and noticed a car swerving across the lanes. Thinking I should keep well clear of the car I pulled across to the near side lane and looked toward the driver as he passed, to realise it was Dixie. When we got to the ground I was not surprised to see that he was not on the team sheet. The report by Roger Duckworth for the Orient game makes for interesting reading, given my story. Shortly after that he was transferred to Carlisle.
Given the above it is a coincidence that the manager involved in bringing Dixie to the club, Harry Haslam, was also born on this day in 1921. There are so many memories I have of the manager who whilst with the club created a team which was always entertaining. He also introduced David Pleat and Danny Bergara to the coaching set up. For a detailed run down on one of many great managers in my time of watching the Hatters there is a link on his Hatters Heritage page entitled “ Harry Haslam - The Boss”, which is a “must read” for all fans of the Hatters.
Finally, as Outsider mentioned in his earlier post the day cannot pass without the mention of the greatest day in England International football 60 years ago this afternoon, when we won the World Cup for the one and only time and introduced me and many of my generation to “ the beautiful game” with all the ups and downs of Tge emotions it has bought over the years. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
