The England team flew into Luton after Italia '90. I've just been reading that week's Luton News.

The police were expecting around 10,000 people but ten times that number showed up. The police chief admitted he would have never had allowed it if they'd realised as they only had 90 officers available. There was no trouble.

Sneering attitudes abounded. Jimmy Greaves had said he doubted a town 'like' Luton could give the team a proper homecoming. Richard Littlejohn had called it 'belittling' that the team had flown into Luton.

It was the team's choice. They had been offered to fly into Heathrow on Concorde but they said they wanted to use Britannia Airways, who had flown them out there. The offer of any meal they liked probably helped. They chose steak and champagne.

Bobby Robson and Gary Lineker were the only people missing as they'd stayed in Italy to cover the final for TV.

The team travelled from Luton Airport to the Chiltern Hotel at the top of Waller Avenue. They often stayed there before flying to games, including the night before they headed off to the World Cup.

You'd expect Dicky Little Dong to make such a comment and Jimmy always talked shit about the Hatters. He's dead now.

I took my children and stood by Park Square. I held my then 4 year old daughter up to touch David Platt's hand. A memorable homecoming. Luton did them proud.

I shook Des Walkers hand as they came out of the Hotel. It was a mental day.

Me and a few mates walked up to the airport fully expecting to be able to walk into the terminal to see the players arrive.

Absolutely amazed when we turned the corner of the Airport approach road and there were thousands of people lining the street.

The England players looking genuinely amazed at the turnout.

Bit ridiculous really considering they lost.

But I think after the troubles of the 80s it felt like a turning point for the game in England.

I was in there some where, my mum offered to take me over, don't think she quite expected to be as many people either!

Luckily I chose to stand and watch the cavalcade from the corner of Eaton Green Road and Frank Lester Way and the was a massive crowd at this point. I believe the New Terminal Building had not been built at that time, so they travelled from the old one and along what is now the Airport Approach Road.
