    Stokes retires

Stunned by this. Thought he would carry on at least for the rest of the year. And next year is an Ashes series.

Huge loss for England. He is irreplaceable.

Typically, he takes a wicket with his first ball after the announcement.

There’s more to this than what meets the eye I’m sure.

If he goes and Key/Baz survive, English cricket is far worse off.

That Saracens moron has a lot to answer for. And the club didn’t discipline him!

          Typical Sarriescum

Probably given him a big (off the books) pay rise too

Stokes wouldn’t have been the player he is without the temperament he has. As captain he’d already been in trouble for events off the field. As a leader it’s the need to lead by example to the rest of the team. Unfortunately, having one more late night cost him. Get the feeling that the top bods are a stickler for the rules, never mind the effects on field. But they let him go under his own terms.

Still think there is a player there. I think he’d still be able to contribute with ball and bat but it hasn’t worked out that way. I guess he felt that if they didn’t want him as captain he’d walked away from the lot.

Agree with you. He is also very stubborn and won’t be told otherwise.

He’ll probably come out and open the batting now.

A fair few at ECB won’t like the fact that he didn’t go to the right sort of school, and that people like that shouldn’t be allowed to captain England.

Some of them still begrudge the abolition of amateur players …..

That was a special moment from an incredibly special player . . . Anderson, Broad and now Stokes. All in that same irreplaceable category.

Joe Root won’t be around too much longer either.

None of them are Ronnie Irani class, granted, but won’t be easily replaced.

No obvious candidate to take over as Captain. Brook has blotted his copybook on tour.
