    Rodney Green answer.

Having posed the question about Rodney Green’s “claim to fame” yesterday I was surprised that it didn’t lead to a single response, or perhaps my question was met with indifference ?

However, for those who may be interested, were not around in season 68/69, or may have forgot, the answer is that (having been transferred to our neighbours at the end of season 67/68) he provided the assist when Barry Endean scored Watford’s goal in our home match against them on 19th February. However, that match was abandoned in the 60th minute due to a blizzard. As a result the match was expunged from any official records and therefore is not included on the Hatters Heritage website either.

I know all the legends of the match when it was finally played and I know it was originally scheduled as a fixture over Christmas that season. What I don’t know though is a) the score at the time of its abandonment, and b) the attendance. Should you be able to enlighten me of course….

The score was 1-1, with our goal being scored by Fred Jardine and the attendance was 21,143

          Thanks.

Are there any reports as to the hour that was played? Who were looking the more likely winners, attempts on goal etc? I’ve honestly never read anything on this….

I know we’d beaten them 3-0 in a League Cup tie earlier that season and lost 1-0 there in the League btw…

My brother in law said (season ticket down the road) Watford fans used to sing "Rodney For England" when he scored and "Rodney For Shenley " when he was crap.
For younger people, Shenley was one of several large mental health institutions.

The replayed game was "somewhat lively" both on and off the pitch.

              Didn't see it . . .

But matches that got abandoned often have good stories . . . maybe they should be included on HH somehow? I'm sure the famous Man City game is already on there in some fashion?

It could also include the Barnet one that wasn't thanks to Ronnie Henry sweet talking the ref.

Another abandoned match from the 60’s was the Darlington home game which was also abandoned, due to a waterlogged pitch, but after only 8 mins !!!

That was about twice as long as the home game against Bournemouth. Our games with them seem to be jinxed - other than the two already referred to another home one was postponed after the scheduled kick-off time.

The Darlington game took place on 28th October 1967, so 2 abandoned games in less than 16 months.

Rodney Green, Rodney Fern. Bit of a connection there. Luton player word association football.
                        Malcom Macdonald, Frankie Bunn.
                        Slow day here.

The scariest one was the Bournemouth game which Tom Lockyer happily recovered from.
