    Rugby's English Championship

    Teams play 26 games.

    1 Ealing Trailfinders W26 D0 L0
    2 Bedford W18 D1 L7
    3 Coventry W16 D0 L10
    4 Worcester W15 D0 L11

Ealing beat Bedford home and away, scoring over 100 points in the two games.

Bedford beat Worcester home and away.

Today, Worcester won at Bedford in the play-off final to become champions.

How can that make sense in any sport 🤦‍♂️

You missed out the crucial bit that Worcester beat Ealing in the semi final.
However I do agree it seems a bit odd including the team finishing top in effectively the play offs.

It's not crucial at all - the format is ludicrous.

The reason that the top team is included is that the play-offs are to decide the champions.

There are fourteen teams - they play each other home and away - the team with the most points should be champions.

Well it kind of is as your post misses out that they lost in the semi final play offs.

          I agree it’s a strange format.

It's all pretty academic anyway as I don't believe any of the 4 clubs would meet the threshold conditions for joining the Premier League, even Ealing who win the Championship every year. Modern rugby union is rubbish.

It wasn't just four teams - it was six.

That's the point - Ealing don't win the championship every year - Worcester won it this year despite finishing FORTY points below Ealing.

Rugby at that level is a mess, most of the teams rely on loans from bigger clubs? especially Ampthill with Saracens.
Ampthill ground is a joke for that level, as is Caldys…

Heard rumours that the Money Man from Ampthill has now bought the club, with a view to developing, which is going to be tough, as whole area is surrounded by a site of SSI

No, they won a ridiculous play off lottery, Ealing were the real winners over the season

I agree but the record books will show thst Worcester were champions.

To me, it stinks of the old applying for election/re-election set-up.

A complete stitch-up to allow the authorities to choose who plays in the top division.

How long before the Premier League does something similar?

Strangely, Bolton came to mind as I was typing that.

Ridiculous. I don’t see the point of play offs in leagues with low revenue anyway. If there has to be a play off then the model of the IPL finals should be considered. 1st plays 2nd and winner goes straight to final. 3rd plays 4th with winner taking on the loser of the first game to go to final. Rewards league position which is always a fair reflection of a season (except when match officials guess that a ball has crossed the line!!!).

We're not Ampthill above Bedford in the divisions in recent years

They have both been in the same division for about the last six or seven years.

I have played at Ampthill hence being suprised The blues were hovering at Ampthills level. Not forgetting Bedford have had an England player or two

It's the other way round - Ampthill have moved up to Bedford's level (second tier).

Bedford have had a lot more than one or two England players.
