One match played today and that was 79 years ago, in 1947. In what was the last game of the season (after one of the severest winters of the 20th Century) a highly entertaining home match against Newport County ended 6-3.

2 players have been born on this day.

The first player was born in 1949 and apart from being part of the midfield team that would lead us to promotion from Division 1 to Division 2 in 1974 he would then go on to be a major part of our history, due to his transfer to Antwerp a year later. A detailed article about him can be found here: https://hattersheritage.co.uk/longer-reads/the-legacy-of-peter-anderson

Happy 77th birthday Peter and thanks for both the football memories and for then helping towards saving the club from being liquidated in 1975.

The other player was Alex Lacey who was born in 1993.

One player has made their debut on this day and that was Horace Wallbanks in the aforementioned Newport game.

I was just reading about that winter of 1946/1947. Apparently it snowed for 55 days consecutively in some areas.

Hard to imagine what that was like for people already facing rationing and other effects of the war.

The socialist government worked hard to get the war affected people looked after and a house building programme.

Always amazes ne how quickly countries rebuilt and where the money came from to do so. That includes Jermany

The Germans benefitted from the Marshall Plan which gave millions of dollars to them to support rebuilding. We on the other had to make repayments under the Lend Lease deal which we finally paid off sometime in the 2010's.
The question often asked was "who actually won the war"

Lend lease was more about Milltary support as I recall

Gordon Brown paid that bill off when im power .

Either way given the destruction created in WW2 it was an impressive recovery over say 40 or 50 years .

When in Krakow I stayed in what they called apartments and in the courtyard you could see war damage .
